The rumors are rife that Nvidia is about to drop its next-generation graphics card soon. The hardware manufacturer is expected to release two new families of GPUs this year, including the gaming-focused GTX 11 series. For now, it is rumored that the Nvidia GTX 11 cards will be unveiled this July, as the mass production for the GPU is currently ongoing.
Per WCCFTech, Nvidia is preparing at least two graphics card technologies in 2018. The GTX 11 series will be based on the new Turing technology, succeeding the current GTX 10 lineup. Meanwhile, the other Nvidia GPU series will be based on Ampere architecture, but it will be more focused on computational works. Interestingly, the Ampere cards are expected to be suited for datamining.
At this point, the reports are suggesting that Nvidia is giving more priority to the GTX 11 series, and it is possible that the gaming GPUs will be ready before summer. The first in the GTX 11 lineup are the so-called GeForce GTX 1180 and 1170 cards, boasting GDDR6 memory. It was tipped that SK Hynix will be among the tech firms to supply GDDR6 memory to Nvidia, and the company is expected to begin the mass production of the hardware very soon, which will be finished just in time for the target July launch of the GTX 11.
There are other reports stating that Samsung could also end up as a supplier of GDDR6 memory, which will be used in Nvidia's top-end GTX 11 products. Samsung is rumored to be producing GDDR6 memory with up to 16Gbps speed, and this is likely to go to the upper-end GTX 1180 card. SK Hynix's GDDR6 chips, on the other hand, will be included in the GTX 1170.
The performance of the GTX 1180 is said to be at par, or even slightly exceed that of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. Meanwhile, the GTX 1170 will be the slightly improved version of the GTX 1080. With a powerful GDDR6 memory, it is expected that the upcoming GTX 11 series GPUs will easily deliver high-quality 4K resolution.
