'Nightwing' news: Chris McKay wants authentic comic book costume for Dick Grayson

"Nightwing" director Chris McKay has just picked a side in the debate over Dick Grayson's mask in his upcoming movie.

In the DC Comics, members of the Bat-family sport white eyes when they have their masks on. Batman, Robin/Nightwing, Batwoman, and so on all have opaque white lenses, with Batgirl and Catwoman the only ones to break the trend. This has never been a thing for their live-action counterparts, however, save for a brief version of Bruce Wayne in 2008's "The Dark Knight."

Thankfully, it appears as though McKay plans to keep his version of the Nightwing comic accurate. While he did not outright confirm it, the director seemed to hint toward including Grayson's white eyes when a fan voiced his preference for the Bat-characters' appearance.

"Whatever costume they keep or go with, can we all agree that white eyes or lenses need to be a staple going forward with a live-action Bat Family? Look at that left mask. @buddboetticher I see your profile picture. Please make it happen," the fan wrote to which McKay responded: "Agreed."

So, when Dick is suited up as Nightwing in the film, fans will not have to worry about his eyes being shown. Assuming this is the case, McKay's "Nightwing may very well end up with one of the most comics-accurate live-action costumes to date. Fans can only keep their fingers crossed.

There is not much known about "Nightwing" at this point. It has yet to cast an actor for the lead role, although actors like Dacre Montgomery, Finn Wittrock, Dave Patel, and Nick Jonas have all been linked to the role. When they do start the casting process, McKay confirmed they will hold an open casting call to find the perfect Dick Grayson.

DC has yet to give the film an official release date, but McKay previously hinted that it could enter pre-production sometime next year.
