Will the world see the highly anticipated HoloLens device from Microsoft anytime soon?

The Redmond-based computer technology giant announced during the "Windows 10: The Next Chapter" event early this year that they will be releasing a smart glasses device called the Microsoft HoloLens. However, until now, little is known about the product.

According to the device's official website, Microsoft HoloLens is "the first fully untethered, see-through holographic computer. It enables high-definition holograms to come to life in your world, seamlessly integrating with your physical places, spaces, and things."

It is reportedly composed of specially designed parts that are meant to make the holographic computing technology work. It does not need any support from wires, PC, or smartphones for it to function, since it uses the groundbreaking Holographic Processing Unit to process the information that users will provide.

According to Microsoft, the HoloLens is different from the other existing holographic technologies like AR or augmented reality and VR or virtual reality, since AR is not capable of connecting the holographic data with the real world because of its single-direction camera, and VR would require users to be completely submerged in the virtual world.

Speculations claim that the upcoming device, dubbed as "the next PC," will be released together with the Windows 10 operating system. But since Microsoft's recent announcement did not mention the HoloLens in the scheduled July 29 release date for their latest operating system, then the mixed reality computing platform might come later than expected. At any rate, Microsoft already started asking developers to build new apps for the Microsoft HoloLens using Windows 10.

The computer technology giant also said that the gaming console Xbox will work with Microsoft HoloLens, and former Lionhead Sudios exec John Needham was tapped to oversee the game developments for HoloLens-supported Xbox games. He will also be working with Kudo Tsunoda for the upcoming product line.
