Fans have had mixed reactions after the announcement that "Metal Gear Survive" will have microtransactions and will require one to have internet connection. Not only that, the latest update about the game indicates that "Survive" will also not include loot boxes and pay-to-win types of microtransactions.
According to Gamerant, "Metal Gear" series producer Yuji Korekado said in an interview with the "Official PlayStation Magazine UK" (February 2018, Issue #145): "There will not be loot boxes and there will not be pay-to-win types of MTX [microtransations]."
The absence of loot boxes may be linked to the controversy regarding loot boxes classifying as a form of gambling. Since there are no loot boxes in "Survive," players are assured that the new game will not be caught in the middle of things once a legislation, which some politicians are pondering about, against the inclusion of loot boxes in games is introduced.
Korekado also eased the worries of some players that inability to participate in microtransactions will make one at a disadvantage when he said in the same interview that "There will be things like the accessories in Metal Gear Online, and Forward Operating Base in The Phantom Pain."
Korekado also cleared up the confusion surrounding the setting of the game. In the same interview, he apologized to the confused fans and clarified the connection of "Survive" to the "Metal Gear Series."
According to Techraptor, "Survive" will deviate from the espionage gameplay and stealth action seen in the "Metal Gear" series on which it was based. "Survive," instead, will be played using a multiplayer mold where players have to battle against other players online. At the same time, gamers need to face zombies or "creatures." The game also takes place in a different timeline, an alternate to that of the rest of the games in the series.
"Survive" will be the first "Metal Gear" series game to be launched following series creator Hideo Kojima's departure from Konami.
"Metal Gear Survive" is set to be released on Feb. 20 for PC, PlayStation 4, and XBox One.
