'Maleficent 2' sequel cast rumors: Disney working on getting Linda Woolverton, Angelina Jolie

Will Angelina Jolie reprise her role as the evil Maleficent in the film's sequel? Disney

Disney is reportedly planning to bring the villainess "Maleficent" back on the big screen.

A source allegedly told TheWrap that the film production outfit is currently in talks with screenwriter Linda Woolverton to come up with a new script for the sequel of the 2014 blockbuster hit featuring Angelina Jolie in the lead role. Woolverton is currently working on the script of "Alice Through the Looking Glass," the sequel to the 2010 fantasy film "Alice In Wonderland," also from Disney.

The report also mentioned that Joe Roth will once again work as the sequel's producer, but director Robert Stromberg will probably not helm "Maleficent 2."  Disney is reportedly expecting to get Jolie back to play the role of the scorned fairy.

In the first film, Jolie's character curses the first-born daughter of her former human lover Stefan (Sharlto Copley) after he chops off her wings due to his selfish ambition. Maleficent curses the infant princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) to fall into a deep, death-like slumber once she pricks her finger on a spinning wheel needle upon reaching the age of 16. The only way to wake her is through a true love's kiss.

But the powerful dark Queen of the Moors, watching the cursed princess grow up, finds herself truly caring for the young girl. Although Maleficent wants to reverse her curse to save Aurora's life, she cannot. She chooses to help a young prince named Philip (Brenton Thwaites) to infiltrate the castle to give Aurora a true love's kiss, but it fails. Ultimately, it is Maleficent's love for Aurora that wakes the princess from her deep sleep.

Cinema Blend noted that Jolie is not keen on returning for sequels since the dismal performance of the succeeding installments in the "Tomb Raider" franchise. She allegedly turned down the offers to reprise her roles in "Salt" and "Wanted," but it is said that Disney is still hoping that the award-winning actress will return in "Maleficent 2."
