'Longmire' season 5 update: Will the Western drama be renewed for another season?

Season 4 of "Longmire" continues to get rave reviews and feedback from critics and viewers alike, and so there is a strong clamor for a fifth season of the Western-themed crime drama.

The latest season almost never made it to the air after A&E cancelled the series, with the final episode of season 3 airing in August 2014. Warner Horizon Television shopped for a new network that would show the continuation of the story — based on Craig Johnson's novels "Walt Longmire Mysteries" — and Netflix decided to pick it up. The 10-episode season 4 was premiered by the entertainment streaming provider on Sept. 10 and fans were allowed to binge-watch the series as soon as it came out.

It began exactly where the previous season ended, when Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) found out who murdered his wife. The sheriff's mission for this season is to find the killer to avenge his wife's death at any cost. Longmire also has to investigate the death of Branch Connally (Bailey Chase), believing that the deputy's death was self-inflicted. The sheriff eventually learns who are responsible for the murders, but he still has to deal with several other crimes that happen within his jurisdiction in Wyoming's Absaroka county.

But because of the cliffhanger dropped in the finale of "Longmire" season 4, loyal fans of the series are hoping to see where the story leads next season.

This is actually not the first time that the writers of "Longmire" presented a cliffhanger without the assurance that the show would return for another season. It happened in season 3 when the fate of Branch and his father Barlow (Gerald McRanney) was left hanging when a gunshot was heard between the two. Good thing the viewers were given the chance to see what happened next when Netflix picked up the show.

At the moment, fans of "Longmire" are still waiting for the announcement from the streaming provider to know if the series will return for season 5.
