Another life is in danger in the conclusion of the two-part season finale of "Law & Order: SVU" season 17.
In the penultimate episode titled "Intersecting Lives," Corrections Officer Gary Munson (guest star Brad Garrett) was accused by female inmates of sexual assault, and the SVU needs to find out if the accusations are true. But Munson's team made the investigation difficult by giving him their full support, and his records claimed that he is actually a good family man.
However, it turned out that Munson is not just guilty of sexually abusing the female inmates, but he hurts his wife as well. This made the team more determined to make him pay for his crimes. But based on the trailer for the finale, titled "Heartfelt Passages," it seems like going after the corrections officer could lead to a potentially fatal end for one of the SVU members.
The trailer begins with Lt. Benson (Mariska Hargitay) telling Munson's wife that she should not return to their home. The woman seems to have ignored Benson's advice, since the next clip shows that she is already held captive by Munson.
Then Dodds (Andy Karl) is seen talking to the corrections officer to let her go and stop preventing the law enforcers from doing their job. But this does not sit well with Munson, who will choose to shoot Dodds instead of getting arrested.
The trailer also shows that Dodds will fight for his life after being shot, but things do not look well for the sergeant. Will this mean that the team will lose one of their own in the finale?
But unlike the previous season finales of the long-running police procedural series, executive producer Julie Martin told The Hollywood Reporter said that they will not feature a big cliffhanger this time because season 17 will also mark the end of showrunner Warren Leight's job on the show.
"In the past years Warren and I have had the luxury of being able to know that we were going to be writing the first two episodes coming back so we could build in the solution to that cliffhanger. Since that's not the case this year, we wanted to finish out our part of the storytelling," Martin said. "There will definitely be a few threads left unanswered, things for the fans to obsess about over the summer for sure but not as big of a cliffhanger as we've done in the past."
The season finale of "Law & Order: SVU" season 17 airs on Wednesday, May 25, on NBC.
