After the long wait, the sixth-generation iPod touch has finally arrived.
Apple Inc. quietly released the highly-anticipated upgrade to its iPod touch product line through its official website. The prolonged wait seems worthwhile, considering the number of improvements in the new touchscreen portable multimedia entertainment device over the 2012-released iPod touch 5G.
Perhaps the biggest improvement in the iPod touch 6G can be found under the hood. The latest edition now comes with the new Apple A8 processor and Apple M8 motion co-processor with 64-bit architecture that also power the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices. However, it is a little bit underclocked at 1.1 GHz compared to the 1.4 GHz of the flagship smartphone products. The new iPod touch 6G also comes with 1 GB of RAM, which is double the size of its predecessor's.
In addition, the sixth-generation iPod touch runs using iOS 8.4 straight out of the box. This means that the multimedia entertainment device can instantly access Apple Music to get hold of thousands of songs under its catalog, as well as Apple Music's Beats 1 Internet-based radio station. It can also be updated to iOS 9 once the operating system comes out later this year.
Other notable improvements in the new iPod touch device includes 8 MP rear iSight camera that has 1080p video recording capability at 30fps. It also comes with a 120fps slow-motion video recording that can capture moving images at 720p, and it comes with a burst mode and LED flash as well.
The front-facing FaceTime HD camera also comes with an improvement, with the f/2.2 apperture option for the 1.2 MP shooter. This means that video conferencing renders a crisper resolution, and it can still capture images and record videos up to 720p under lower light conditions.
The only downside to the new iPod touch is the lack of improvement in its screen size, which stays at 4 inches, its LCD display rendering 1136 x 640 pixel resolution with a 326 ppi index.
The new iPod touch 6G can be purchased at very reasonable prices. The entry-level 16 GB version can be purchased for $199, while the 32 GB version is $249. Those who want to purchase higher memory options can choose between the 64 GB version which costs $299, while the largest 128 GB version can be purchased for $399.
Also, the iPod touch 6G comes in five different colors, namely Space Gray, Blue, Silver, Pink, and the Gold edition which is being offered for the first time in the iPod product line.
