Apple has no confirmation yet regarding the development of a next-generation iPhone SE handset. Although, the rumors are rife that the Cupertino-based tech giant is set to reveal the iPhone SE 2 at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference. According to the latest reports, the upcoming budget-friendly iPhone variant will sport a 4.2-inch display and an upgraded Apple mobile chipset.

The latest leak regarding the iPhone SE 2 came from the Chinese website QQ, in which the anonymous source claims that Apple will unveil the upgraded hardware at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC)

event in June. While the iPhone SE 2 is expected to boast more powerful specs and enhanced features, it will still remain as the company's cheaper iPhone model. Among the expected updates will be the 4.2-inch display, which is slightly larger than the original iPhone SE's 4-inch screen.

Moreover, the next-gen iPhone SE will make the leap from the A9 chip. It is expected to run an A10 system on chip (SoC), which is capable of supporting the upcoming iOS 12 update. However, the A9 processor will not be as powerful as the mobile chipsets used in the latest iPhone devices. The smartphone will include a 2 GB random-access memory (RAM) and two built-in storage options, 32 GB and 128 GB. Contrary to earlier reports that the iPhone SE 2 will adapt the latest Face ID technology, QQ claims that the handset will stick to the Touch ID feature to maintain a cheaper cost.

Speaking of the iPhone SE 2's rumored 4.2-inch display, there are doubts regarding this portion of the leak because this change in display size is almost negligible. A 0.2-inch increase has no benefit for the users, and doing so in spite of that fact would only cause additional work effort on Apple's side. It is suggested that this mild increase might have something to do with slimmer bezels for the iPhone SE 2, although its effect is viewed to be only marginal.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously predicted that the iPhone SE 2 will not have the 3D facial recognition technology, as well as the wireless charging capability, of the iPhone X. However, Kuo himself is not sold to the idea that a major hardware refresh is happening to the standard edition iPhone. It remains to be seen if Apple will proceed with the iPhone SE 2 in the coming months.
