The release date of Intel's next-generation processor may just be right around the corner. Recent reports claim that the highly anticipated Intel Skylake might be unveiled during the annual video games and software trade fair Gamescom in Cologne, Germany in early August.

Digitimes reported that the 14nm Skylake processors as well as its 100-series chipsets developed for desktops will be released at the Gamescom 2015. According to the website, several sources who have knowledge of the upstream supply chain mentioned that the Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K as well as the gamer-friendly Z170 chipsets will also be released at the same time.

Both the Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K will be made for the LGA1151 package that can be used with all future motherboards developed using the company's 100-series chipset. On the other hand, the motherboards using the Intel Z170 Express chipset has the capacity to allow CPU overclocking.

Intel Skylake also comes with an integrated memory controller that could support DDR3 and DDR4 memory standards.

The Intel Skylake Core i7-6700/ 6700T, Core i5-6600, 6500, 6400, 6600T, 6500T and 6400T, and H170 and B150 chipsets are the sixth-generation processors from the Santa Clara, California-based semiconductor chip manufacturer. It is considered as the successor of the Broadwell chipset line that was released last year.

According to earlier reports, Intel describes Skylake as its "most important chip architecture" in the last 10 years, and it will be compatible with most Core i3, i5 and i7 PC processors as well as Xeon server chips.

PC Advisor U.K. reported in March that the chipset manufacturer is rushing to release Skylake to replace the Broadwell chipset line, which earned a lot of criticisms since it was first released in September 2014. Several Broadwell chipsets were allegedly delayed because of some manufacturing issues.

Gamescom 2015 is slated to begin on August 5 and end on August 9. However, Intel has yet to confirm if the brand-new Skylake chipset will be coming out at the said event.
