'Independence Day 2' movie sequel rumors: Liam Hemsworth tapped to star?

Is Liam Hemsworth replacing Will Smith in the upcoming sequel of Independence Day? Wikipedia

The highly anticipated sequel to Will Smith's blockbuster hit "Independence Day" is finally taking shape, and rumors claim that "The Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth has been offered to replace Smith in the lead role.

Based on the report posted by TheWrap, multiple sources claimed that Chris Hemsworth's younger brother had been asked to star in the sequel titled "ID Forever."  If the rumors are true, the actor is an ideal choice to portray the important role of saving the world from alien invasion since younger audiences can easily relate with him. Hemsworth's role as Gale in "The Hunger Games" series brought him worldwide popularity.

However, the 25-year old actor would have some big shoes to fill if he will indeed take on the role that Smith will vacate for the film's sequel. Smith's film earned $817.4 million worldwide, which means that the young Australian actor needs to step up to be at par or even exceed that record once the film is released next year.

Still, Hemsworth's camp and 20th Century Fox have neither confirmed nor denied the rumors about the offered role.

It's been almost 20 years since Smith's record-breaking film was shown, and it's high time for a follow-up. The sequel will be helmed by original director Roland Emmerich. Actors Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will reprise their roles as computer expert David Levinson and U.S. President Thomas Whitmore, respectively, but Smith will not return because of an alleged budget issue. Meanwhile, other reports claim that "Fantastic Four" star Michael B. Jordan is also asked to be part of the movie.

Carter Blanchard had been asked to rewrite the script originally written by James Vanderbilt. Emmerich and Harald Kloser will be producing the film, together with original producer Dean Devlin.

The alleged release of the "Independence Day" sequel is scheduled on June 24, 2016, almost two decades after the first film was featured on screen on July 3, 1996.
