The much-awaited reboot of the fantasy, action thriller "Highlander" is finally happening as Ryan Condal's script for the cult-classic remake has been approved by Lionsgate, with pre-production to start later this year.

After acquiring Summit Entertainment back in 2012, Lionsgate has had its hands on the future of the "Highlander" franchise and, finally, after years of arduous script-finding, it decided to continue with the film using Condal's script, known for his works on the TV series "Colony" and the sci-fi film "Rampage."

According to reports, before Condal took his shot at writing a script for the movie reboot, Lionsgate tapped Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, known for their works in Marvel's "Ant-Man" and the upcoming film "The Wasp," to write a script for the film. However, it is unknown what happened with that collaboration, or if Condal reworked the former's written script.

Patrick Wachsberger, Lionsgate's Head of Motion Picture Group, said that they have finally been satisfied with Condal's script for the film, which he detailed is written with sequels intended.

"We've finally got a screenplay we're happy with. We have set up the story so it has sequel potential," Wachsberger announced.

The movie also has a confirmed director in the form of Chad Stahelski. Stahelski plans on making the new franchise into a trilogy much like his other action, thriller work "John Wick."

Although confirmations for a 2019 release have been made and filming will be commencing October of this year, details regarding a specific release date have yet to be announced.

"Highlander" was originally release back in 1986, which starred Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert in lead roles. The movie sees the story of immortals battling for supremacy against each other in order to stand as the sole survivor of the undying men from the ancient past. Due to its popularity, it spanned several sequels and TV spin-offs, which similarly, were received positively. In addition to this, novels and comic books have also been produced under the franchise.
