'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' cast news: James Gunn reveals two characters skipping sequel

Benicio del Toro won't return as Collector in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2." Marvel Studios

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" may have added a slew of cast members such as Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell but it is also letting go of a couple of characters from the original.

In a Facebook Q&A, director James Gunn revealed that John C. Reilly won't reprise his role as Corpsman Dey in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" sequel as well as Benicio Del Toro, who played the role of the Collector in the first film.

Gunn did not go into Reilly's absence in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" but he did reveal the reason why Del Toro won't be part of the film. The filmmaker said that Collector "just didn't fit into" the movie.

This makes sense, considering that Gunn has said in the past that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" won't get into the Infinity Stones mythology where Collector's plotline intertwined in the first film. This also meant that Thanos won't be in the film either.

While Del Toro is sitting "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" out, Gunn hinted that his character may pop up at some point. "I'm very excited to see him in the MCU in the future, I hope," he said.

MCU is at the point where the Infinity Stones are slowly taking center stage. This will certainly open up opportunities for Collector to re-emerge once again, although fate in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie is still unclear.

The last scene in the film that the Collector was in shows him getting his wounds tended caused by the explosion that Carina engineered in order to escape from him.

As for the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" production, Gunn said that they are "just a little over halfway" through.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will be released on May 5, 2017. A third installment of the franchise was already confirmed by Marvel.
