'Grey's Anatomy' season 12 spoilers: will things change between Stephanie and Kyle after his surgery?

Kyle and Stephanie talks about the future. ABC

A simple conversation turns into a heartbreaking scene in the next episode of "Grey's Anatomy" season 12.

In the sneak peek for the episode called "At Last," Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) and her boyfriend Kyle (Wilmer Valderrama) are having a serious conversation about the future.

Kyle seems relaxed but obviously weak as he tells Stephanie how much he missed her. Stephanie reassures him that he will soon be cured after a surgery.

"Look, I talked to Dr. Shepherd about your surgery," Stephanie says in the clip. "And she's got this. You're gonna make it through this. I know it."

But instead on focusing on his upcoming surgery, Kyle starts to talk about his plans of bringing Stephanie to Europe. This could mean that Kyle's days is actually numbered, and he will not be able to survive his surgery despite what Stephanie told him.

Meanwhile, Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia's (Caterina Scorsone) relationship will start to get deeper in the upcoming episode.

McKidd told TVLine that his character will "take a huge step" in their relationship. He said that Owen's next decision "kind of leads them into a conversation about, 'What is the future for us?'"

However, the actor chose not to share what Owen will come up with in the upcoming episode, but he described it as something pretty romantic. He also shared that one of the scenes in the episode is "a really fun thing to have played," and that Owen and Amelia are finally in a much better circumstance than before. Does it mean that the couple can finally find their way to the altar anytime soon?

The official synopsis for the upcoming episode reads:

"Owen and Amelia take their relationship to the next level; Alex gains some clarity on his future with Jo; and Callie and Arizona continue to struggle with the current custody arrangement."

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12, episode 23 will air Thursday, May 12, on ABC.
