Greg Monroe free agency news: New Orleans Pelicans front runners in acquiring big man

Phoenix Suns big man Greg Monroe is up for grabs as the Suns have released the offensive center through a contact buyout agreement. Monroe was acquired in a trade last December from the Milwaukee Bucks. The low-post specialist was the centerpiece of the Bucks in acquiring explosive point guard, Eric Bledsoe.

Many thought that the Suns traded for Monroe only because of his contract. Monroe's contract will be unguaranteed, and he will turn into a free agent after this season, making him a great piece to clear some cap room. Many teams in need of some frontcourt depth will be in line for Monroe's services. The former Detroit Pistons lottery pick has always been an above average offensive center and rebounder.

However, with a lack of a reliable jumpshot along with shaky defense, Monroe figures to be a quintessential 6th man off the bench. Coming off the bench has been the case for several big men with similar talents. Players such as Al Jefferson, Jahlil Okafor, Enes Kanter, Nikola Vucevic, and Monroe have all seen extended minutes off the bench.

The team that looks to be the best candidate for Monroe is the New Orleans Pelicans, who recently lost superstar DeMarcus Cousins to a ruptured achilles tendon. Cousins, who averaged around 25 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists, will be tough to fill for Monroe, who is nowhere near Cousins talent level.

However, the ground-bound center will figure to start right off the bat alongside power forward Anthony Davis. Monroe's offensive game in the paint mirrors Cousins, as both love to play bruising post moves. Still, Monroe will not be able to feel Cousins' passing and shooting.

Three other teams who figure to be contenders are looking hard at Monroe, particularly the Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and San Antonio Spurs. Both the Wizards and the Spurs could need a younger big man, as Marcin Gortat (Wizards) and Pau Gasol (Spurs) are all aging centers.

As for the Celtics, the team has always struggled in rebounding since last season, as All-star center Al Horford is not a great rebounder.

Monroe and his agent have said that they may arrive at a decision as early as Friday.
