"Gotham" returns to the small screen on Jan. 5, and it will introduce a new character and a possible love interest for Ben McKenzie's character, detective Jim Gordon. Earlier reports confirmed that "Homeland" alum Morena Baccarin will join the cast of the TV adaptation of DC Comics' popular series as Dr. Leslie Thompkins.

The doctor will introduce herself to the detective in the upcoming 11th episode of the show titled "Rogues Gallery." She will have to work with Gordon at Gotham City's Arkham Asylum, the place where the world's most ruthless and cunning criminals are situated. She will also play an important role in the life of young Bruce Wayne, played by David Mazouz, who will eventually turn out to be Gotham City's superhero Batman.

McKenzie recently verified reports that Baccarin will portray the role of his love interest in the upcoming episode of "Gotham" via an interview with the Daily Beast. He also mentioned that the actress appeared in his earlier popular project call "The OC."

McKenzie narrated, "They just hired Morena Baccarin on Gotham to play my love interest, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, and she said, 'Hey, I did an episode of The O.C.!' and I was like, 'What!?'"

Meanwhile, "Gotham" executive producer Danny Cannon explained the importance of Dr. Thompkins in the story of the series, saying that the role will lead to something much more explosive compared to what the fans may think.

"Absolutely. And maybe that's why their relationship may have some lasting effects, because I think they have a lot in common, too. He is vulnerable, and he can't really do this alone. No, we have a lot of plans for that relationship, and not just to support Jim but also to make him vulnerable," the series co-producer said.

"Gotham" episode 11 airs Monday, Jan. 5, on Fox.
