Google Pixel 3 release date, specs rumors: Next flagship smartphone to boast iris scanner

The next-gen Google Pixel smartphone is not expected to arrive until October this year, but rumors are already about regarding its possible new design and features. The search engine giant is probably looking for ways to introduce the Google Pixel 3 with much hype, just like how Apple's iPhone X flagship was received by the public upon its launch. According to the latest reports, the Google Pixel 3 could use an advanced iris scanner to match the Face ID feature of the iPhone X.

As reported by Value Walk, the Google Pixel 3 could implement iris scanning technology to unlock the smartphone. To note, the Pixel 3 will not be the first device to feature an iris scanner as the same biometric sensor was already introduced by OnePlus in 2017. Likewise, Samsung's recent flagship handsets such as the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S9 have also incorporated iris scanning.

Nevertheless, having an iris scanning feature in the Google Pixel 3 is a great development, given that its current technology is not reliable enough to be used for security purposes in Android apps. It appears that Google is the only tech firm that could make this possible in Android-based devices. The Pixel 3's advanced iris scanner will prove that this feature is reliable enough to be entrusted for the phone's sensitive information. To deliver this technology, Google is said to enter a partnership with Fingerprints, a company that has already manufactured a number of iris scanners in different mobile devices.

Earlier rumors suggest that the Google Pixel 3 will catch up with the trend among high-end smartphones. Specifically, the Pixel 3 is expected to sport an all-screen display with an edge-to-edge design and slimmer bezels. The handset's display will also be made taller with its 18:9 aspect ratio. The Google Pixel 2 was also thought to boast a dual-lens camera, which did not materialize. However, the Pixel 3 could be the one to feature this camera setup. The smartphone was also tipped to arrive in three variants later this year, namely Albacore, Blueline and Crosshatch.
