'Girl Meets World' season 3 spoilers: Showrunner reveals how show can tackle more mature themes; show petitioned to move to Freeform

"Girl Meets World" season 3 will tackle heavier themes, but with a catch. Disney Channel

"Girl Meets World" season 3 is all about Riley and the gang braving the big and scary hallways of high school. For some fans, this also meant for the show to take a bold step and embark upon heavier themes and issues.

Showrunner Michael Jacobs has always said that while they will tackle bolder subjects in "Girl Meets World" season 3, they will always take note of the parameters of the show being on Disney Channel and the young demographic of the show.

This pushed a fan to start a petition to move "Girl Meets World" to Freeform, where Jacobs will no longer worry about restrictions in storytelling, about what to tell and what not to tell.

The petitioner believes that "Girl Meets World" will "never reach its fullest potential while it's on Disney." Also, this will supposedly help the show extend its run for longer than what Disney allows majority of its shows to stay on air.

At the time of writing, only 365 signatures are needed to complete the petition. Of course, "Girl Meets World" finding a new home is another story. Jacobs told The Wrap that as long as "Girl Meets World" is on Disney, they will "honor the people who invited us to play at their house."

He did say that "Girl Meets World" season 3 will be "honest" and will feature "intriguing and compelling episodes, but never breaking the thread of truth."

Jacobs also hinted that maturity of themes might play out in "Girl Meets World" season 3 when the Riley-Lucas-Maya love triangle is given a resolution.

When a couple emerges from it, "that meant that they decided to further their relationship, which might explore, naturally, what comes next," Jacobs explained. This will be presented "honestly" but "within the parameters."

"Girl Meets World" season 3 will premiere this spring.
