'Furious and Furious 8' spoilers, release date: Dwayne Johnson to return as Agent Hobbs; spin-off coming?

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as Agent Hobbs in Fast and Furious 7 Universal Pictures

Despite losing one of its most loved cast members when actor Paul Walker died in a tragic car accident in November 2013, the "Fast and Furious" movie series still lives on, with an eighth installment set to be released in 2017. Vin Diesel, the lead actor who portrays the iconic role of Dom Toretto in the series, confirmed the reports that the blockbuster movie franchise will continue just as planned before Walker died.

Director James Wan earlier revealed that a different ending was planned for "Furious 7," but they had to modify it because of Walker's death so that there could be a closure for the series in case it would not get a follow-up. But since "Furious 7" managed to perform well in the box-office and became recognized for being the seventh highest-grossing film of all time, a new installment was ordered by Universal Studios.

Diesel will, undoubtedly, reprise his role as Toretto, and reports say that he will be joined by other "Furious 7" cast members, including Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson who will return as Agent Hobbs.

Johnson also reported that he recently talked to some of the studio execs, and mentioned that Hobbs could possibly have his own spin-off movies in the future.

"I just had a big conversation with the studio so we'll see. I still think for me personally, we create a little bit of space from seven and gauge what the audience will want and go from there. That's my take on it. Now a lot of other people have their own [say]," the actor stated in an interview with NerdReport

"Furious 8" will allegedly be set in New York, where the crew will follow CIA Agent Mr. Nobody, played by Kurt Russell. There are also reports that Sean Bosworth will return in the franchise as Lucas Black, and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw will return as the main antagonist in the next installment of the series.

"Furious 8" is expected to be released on April 14, 2017.
