Fox has pulled the plug on "Wayward Pines."

The mind-bending thriller has been canceled by Fox after two seasons, according to reports. "Wayward Pines," a series from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, aired its final episode in season 2 back in July 2016. News of the cancellation comes almost a year after Shyamalan and Fox executives teased a potential season 3.

In August 2017, Fox Entertainment boss David Madden was asked about the show's fate since the network still has not decided whether it will be renewed or not. He confirmed at the time that Shyamalan had been in touch with them to talk about how a potential season 3 would look like.

"We don't know yet," Madden told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour when asked if the series has been canceled. "M. Night has talked to both Dana and me recently about the possibilities of what a third season could be. We are exploring story and casting ideas; we haven't made any decisions."

Based on Fox's decision, it seems they were not able to come up with anything worthwhile for the series.

Inspired by Blake Crouch's best-selling novels, "Wayward Pines" often offered new twists but the execution tended to be a matter of hit and miss for the viewers. Season 2 left a lot of storyline possibilities open but it's unlikely that other networks will pick it up for another run because there is not enough interest in the industry.

Shyamalan worked as the show's director during its entire run, alongside original showrunner Chad Hodge. The series followed a Secret Service agent who learned about strange phenomena taking place in a small Idaho town. Brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, known for creating "Stranger Things," served as the show's executive producers for season 1.

Fox has yet to release an official press statement about the cancellation of "Wayward Pines."
