Cooperative survival game "Fortnite" recently received a new patch alongside a brand new map. The patch went live on Jan. 17, and the developers posted a news update about it.

The update states, "This patch includes the long awaited Battle Royale map update, along with a number of significant improvements to the Scoped AR, voice chat, and much more. Dive into the full notes below."

It then went on to announce a brand new city and an underground mine.

New map areas aside, the new battle royale themed area also came with new surprises for the "Fortnite" players. Those surprises include: the snowball launcher being swapped out for a normal grenade launcher, the AR scope being improved, and slightly larger grenades – aside from that, the "Fortnite" team also fixed a handful of bugs affecting explosives and Boogie Bombs.

Cosmetic changes are not the only thing available in the latest patch, some gameplay elements have been tweaked as well. One of the biggest examples of this, is the removal of friendly fire. Now, teammates will not be able to cause accidental harm to the rest of their team. It also protects players from trolls who join teams only to betray them toward the end. This latest update, however, is under observation and subject to change depending on how the players react to the changes.

Some other minor gameplay changes include: the ability to destroy cornfields, the ability to aim immediately after landing a jump (as long as the aim button is being pressed), and the ability to build things in areas with empty chests and broken streetlights.

The complete list of fixed bugs and changes can be found in the news update.

According to Kotaku, the latest update did a good job of making "Fortnite" feel like a quicker and more action-packed game. Kotaku also went on to post a before and after picture of the game's map, showcasing all the brand new areas added to the latest version.

The added areas make "Fortnite" an even bigger playground and only add to the game's potential to be a fun romp with both friends and online foes.
