'Fear The Walking Dead' plot spoilers: showrunner reveals major plot for spin-off series

More details have been revealed about "Fear The Walking Dead," the highly anticipated companion series to "The Walking Dead." Series showrunner Dave Erickson talked to The Hollywood Reporter to answer some of the most common questions regarding the upcoming series.

According to Erickson, "Fear The Walking Dead" will showcase what happened shortly before the events in the first season of the original series; that is, when Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) was still in a coma. This means that the new show is not a prequel since the story is set at roughly the same time as the original show.

However, those who are expecting to see how the zombie outbreak happened in the first place will be disappointed, since "TWD" writer and creator Robert Kirkman firmly stated that he will never reveal the answer in any of the shows and in the comics on which the TV adaptations are loosely based.

The series showrunner stated that "Fear The Walking Dead" is mainly about a family that, unfortunately, is there during the rise of the undead. The story revolves around a complicated household which Travis (Cliff Curtis) and his new wife Madison (Kim Dicken) are trying to form, but their union gets highly difficult because of the kids. Madison has two children with her deceased husband, one is the overachieving high school student Alicia (Alycia Debnam Carey) and the other one is a troubled college drop-out named Nick (Frank Dillane). On the other hand, Travis also brings with him Chris (Lorenzo James Henry), his son from his previous marriage who blames him for divorcing his mother Lisa (Elizabeth Rodriguez).

The other characters include Daniel, played by Ruben Blades, and his daughter who is said to be portrayed by Mercedes Mason.

"You're talking about two people who, as the story opens, all they want is to bring their family together under one roof and make everyone whole. The irony for us is that the only thing that helps accomplish that is that the world ends," Erickson said.

The series exec also talked about their plans of incorporating some of the killed-off characters from the past seasons of "TWD," which he said could happen but they are not touching that subject yet at this point.

The series premiere of "Fear The Walking Dead" is expected to come in summer, but AMC has yet to announce the specific date.
