England vs India 1st Test day 3: England 352-9 after gutsy playing from Joe Root prevents total collapse

At the end of the third day of the first Test at Trent Bridge, England are trailing India by 105 runs.

It would have been total collapse had Joe Root and James Anderson not made a brilliant last wicket stand to deny India the 10th wicket.

England had been making heavy work of bowling from India's Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, losing six wickets for 68 runs.

Kumar and wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni proved a challenging partnership for Ian Bell and Ben Stokes, and both were quickly out to leave England in crisis going into the tea break.

But Broad got the hosts back on track with an aggressive 47 runs and the partnership between Root and Broad gave England 78 runs, putting them on a firmer footing going into the fourth day.

Broad wasn't best amused when he fell for 47 to Kumar and didn't seem to agree with being given out lbw but TV replays showed the umpire's decision was right.

Root was upbeat about England's performance today, telling Sky Sports afterwards: "Great credit to the guys after tea.  Broad's innings put all the pressure back on them and a lof of credit has to go to Jimmy at the end, they have given us a great chance to get back into the match.

"Me and Jimmy have some good work to do tomorrow hopefully.  The tea break broke up their rhythm, and gave us the opportunity to re-group.  The way Broad came out and attacked them was fantastic."
