Fox will offer a new musical TV drama in the beginning of 2015, and it promises to be packed with lots of emotional twists and turns partnered with incredible hip hop music, which is the central element of the brand new "Empire" series.
The new show that features a stellar cast is led by Oscar-nominated actor Terrence Howard, who takes on the role of hip hop's most influential man and cunning CEO of Empire Entertainment Luscious Lyon. Howard's character was once a ruthless drug dealer and rapper who eventually made it big in the music industry, and managed to become one of the most respected hip hop record producers. Lyon's life turned upside down when he found out that he is terminally sick with ALS — he realized that he needs to groom one of his three sons to continue his musical legacy and business empire.
Lyon's eldest son is Andrei, played by Trai Byers. He is the most responsible and business-minded among all of the Lyon children, but he lacks the charisma that his father possesses.
The second son Jamal is being portrayed by Jussie Smollet. He, on the other hand, is a musical prodigy just like his father, but he tends to step away from fame. Jamal is known to have a sensitive soul, which is very evident in his music. Yet his relationship with his father is strained because Lyon is ashamed of the fact that his son is gay.
Then there is Hakeem, played by Bryshere Grey. He is Lyon's youngest and most favorite son, who also happens to be a gifted musician. Yet Hakeem is a spoiled brat, and he is only after the fame that comes from being the son of a music mogul but he does not want to work hard for anything.
The twisted family is completed by critically-acclaimed actress Taraji P. Henson, who plays the role of Lyon's ex-wife Cookie, who just came out from prison. She wants to get a huge chunk from Lyon's empire.
The new show also features another notable role played by Gabourey Sidibe. Sidebe portrays the role of Lyon's loyal assistant Becky, who attends to all his orders immediately.
Aside from the amazing stars in the show, viewers should expect to hear incredible music that are written and produced by award-winning record producer Timbaland.
"Empire's" premiere episode, directed by series creator Lee Daniels, will air on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
