After six critically acclaimed seasons, ITV finally showcased the final episode of "Downton Abbey" with several explosive endings that fans never saw coming.
During Sunday night's episode, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) had an unexpected wedding with race car driver Henry Talbot (Matthew Goode) after he had to literally drag her to church. But while the eldest daughter of Lord and Lady Grantham found her happy ending in the episode, she became the cause of her younger sister Edith's despair when she revealed to her fiancé Bertie Pelham (Harry Hadden-Paton) that Marigold is her daughter.
The Marquess of Hexham decided to leave Downton and Lady Edith because he became disappointed that Edith did not trust him enough to share her secret. Because of this, Edith will no longer be a marchioness and lose her chance of eternal happiness.
But this did not sit well with the viewers, since most of them want to see the other Crawley daughter to have a happy ending of her own. Which is why they are hoping to see a development in her story in the final Christmas special of the popular British period drama.
Some fans expressed their disappointment on social media and even threatened series creator Julian Fellowes to better make sure that Lady Edith will end up happy in the upcoming series finale of Downton Abbey to avoid the wrath of the angry viewers.
But based on the recent statement of series executive producer Gareth Neame in an interview with RadioTimes, there are certain things in the series that will be left hanging.
"Some matters will be left open, because no one reaches complete resolution until the end of their lives," Neame shared. "Romantic stories require resolution. But the fact is that our camera will gradually drift away from the Abbey and whichever inhabitants remain and we'll leave them to continue their lives..."
Expect to see bigger twists in the 92-minute Christmas special/series finale of "Downton Abbey" next month.
