"Destiny 2," the much-awaited sequel to the first-person sci-fi shooter video game "Destiny," will not be released in September this year as gamers expected. This is according to Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier, who was told by sources familiar to the development that the target date won't be met.
For the uninitiated, it was initially thought that the follow-up will be released during the aforesaid date, which is two years after the first one was released. This is what was stated in an Activision (game publisher) contract leaked almost four years ago.
Schreier said that developer Bungie follows no roadmap when it comes to the future "Destiny" installments primarily because "they may not know exactly what's coming down the road" either. The insider said that "plans for Destiny's future are constantly in flux."
"As an example, just last week higher-ups at Bungie delayed "Destiny 2" out of this September, according to people familiar with goings-on at the studio," he wrote, adding that not all the folks in the game studio know about such delay.
Gamespot also notes that Bungie and Activision always planned to release sequels every other year until 2019. In between should be massive DLC. With the release of the outsized "Destiny" DLC, The "Taken King" last year, Bungie was on track to release "Destiny 2" this year.
But with the delay, it looks like there will be some slight change of plans. That being said, it does not look like "Destiny 2" will be here anytime soon. Either way, fans won't be so shocked about that anyway. Even the first one, which was originally slated to release in 2013, ended up seeing the light of day in 2014 instead.
It looks like "Destiny 2" will share the same fate as its predecessor. Schreier has been saying that development of the game is almost always problematic for Bungie, with glitches popping that need fixing and polishing here and there.
Apart from this, Bungie also has some other projects going on. As per Business Insider, the developer's time will be consumed by the upcoming week-long Valentine's Day affair "Crimson Days" on top of a "larger" game update to be released sometime after next month.
