'Designated Survivor' season 2 spoilers: Kirkman hounded by wife's death as lives are in the balance

The hardest moments of Kirkman's presidency are coming on ABC's "Designated Survivor." Facebook/DesignatedSurvivor

As "Designated Survivor" returns after its hiatus, it seems only one thing can be expected: President Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) will never be the same. But with the lives of Americans in the balance, will he be able to handle a potential national matter like he used to before his own life changed?

This episode will also dwell on FBI agent Hannah Wells' (Maggie Q) travel to Cuba with Aaron Shore (Adan Canto) and how a simple trade delegation trip will all go awry. In the midst of Kirkman's grief, this recent matter of national relevance will test his mettle as commander-in-chief as the nation watches how he will handle the Cuban situation.

After a car accident and the resultant death of his wife Alex (Natascha McElhone), Kirkman is emotionally distressed and, as the country literally depends on him, it seems seeing a therapist is the most feasible way for him to regain his mental strength. Perhaps, this question weighs heavily on his mind: Was it really an accident or part of a bigger conspiracy?

According to TV Guide, the First Lady's death would have been a by-product of her legal battle against FBI director Forsell, played by Reed Diamond. According to showrunner Keith Eisner, the dilemma for Kirkman is finding it hard to recover because the last time he spoke with his wife, they argued with each other. Owing to the fact that he never resolved that and asked for a proper apology is causing him much grief.

The 11th episode of season 2 focuses on how his senior staff tries to "revive" Kirkman after his personal tragedy. As seen in the promos, Kirkman is seen spacing out, and his staff is bothered by the fact that he opted not to pursue military action as he would have prior to Alex's death.

The midseason premiere will be on Feb. 28 with the episode aptly titled "Grief." Catch it on ABC at 10/9 p.m. C or 11/12 p.m. EST.
