'Daredevil' season 3 cast news: Fan-favorite villain confirmed to return as Marvel appoints new showrunner

"Daredevil" is bringing back the first villain Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) has ever faced: Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin.

Deadline broke the news on Wednesday that the D'Onofrio is reprising his role in "Daredevil" season 3, after going against the titular vigilante in season 1 and briefly appearing in the second run. "Vincent is an exceptional actor who returns with the incredible gravitas he brings to Fisk," executive producer Jeph Loeb told the publication. "

The last time fans saw the Fisk in a face-to-face meeting with Murdock in prison, fully aware that he is the real Daredevil and vowing to use it to make his life a living hell. While the plot is still under wraps, the Kingpin's return adds credence to the rumor that the season 3 will follow the "Daredevil" comics' infamous storyline, "Born Again."

Created by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, SlashFilm recalls it sees a heroin-addicted Karen Page (portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll in the series) selling Daredevil's real identity to her dealer. The secret eventually makes its way to Fisk who effectively dismantles Murdock's life by freezing his bank accounts, revoking his law license, and foreclosing his house, among others. This drives Matt mad to the point that he questions his own insanity until his sister, Maggie, saves him.

There is no confirmation yet on how significant Fisk's role will be next season, but hopefully, it will be more than his quick season 2 cameo.

Meanwhile, "Daredevil" season 3 is also getting a new showrunner in Erik Oleson. Oleson most recently served as a writer and executive producer on Amazon's "The Man in the High Castle. However, he has also delved into the superhero world before as a co-executive producer on the CW's "Arrow." Oleson replaces Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez who oversaw the Netflix series' second season following Steven S. DeKnight's departure after season 1.

"Daredevil" has no official return date yet, but the third installment is expected to be released in 2018, likely after "Jessica Jones" season 2 premieres.
