Aside from the cancellation of the long-running original "CSI" series, CBS also announced that they have big plans for its latest spin-off, "CSI: Cyber."

The branch of CSI that tackles cybercrime-related cases was given the go-signal to air its second season, but a major change will happen when the show returns this fall.

According to reports, Peter MacNichol will no longer reprise his role as FBI Assistant Deputy Director Simon Sifter for "CSI: Cyber" season 2. He will give way to the entrance of Ted Danson's character DB Russell, who has led the original CSI crime lab graveyard shift since season 12. The reason for MacNichol's departure is allegedly a part of the show's creative process.

Meanwhile, the first season finale of "CSI: Cyber" provided a glimpse of what fans should look forward to in the second season. The two-hour finale titled "Family Secrets" showed a big dilemma that Krumitz (Charley Koontz) will have to face.

The FBI agent became the prime suspect for the death of the man who murdered his parents when he was only 12 years old. But as the episode progressed, viewers found out that it was his sister Francine (Angela Trimbur) who killed the man for revenge.

The story could lead to the plot that will be tackled in season 2. Either Krumitz will hand over his sister to the FBI or he will help her escape and cover up her crime. This could be where CSI Rusell enters the show, to help Patricia Arquette's Avery Ryan solve the murder case since the crime is not cyber-related.

"CSI:Cyber" season 2 is expected to return this fall.

On the other hand, CBS is preparing a fitting farewell to the original "CSI" series by releasing a two-hour TV movie special, where original cast members William Petersen and Marg Helgenberher will return for the finale. The special episode is slated to air on Sept. 27.
