Erin Lindsay may be in a downward spiral since she turned over her badge at the end of "Chicago P.D." season 2 but she'd still offer her life to protect one of her colleagues, and that's what's bound to happen when the series returns for its third season later this month.

Based on the latest trailer for "Chicago P.D." season 3, Lindsay (Sophia Bush) still stands by her decision to stay away from the precinct as she feels responsible for the death of her friend Nadia Decotis (Stella Maeve) in season 2. The intelligence unit detective has turned to drugs and alcohol, and she has moved back with her manipulative mother Bunny (Markie Post) to get over Nadia's death. She also officially ended her partnership with Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), both professionally and personally, because of the pain that continues to eat her up inside.

However, series executive producer Matt Olmstead said that Halstead is still unconvinced that Lindsay will give up on her profession easily.

"There's a line coming up where he says, 'Tell me to my face that you're done with this.' And when she tells him, he says, 'I don't know who you are, but if you ever see Lindsay again, tell her she made me a better cop.' So, he doesn't even know who this person is anymore," Olmstead told TV Guide

But when Halstead's life is put in danger, Lindsay does not think twice about volunteering to save him from his abductors as they demand that a lone female officer be sent to save him.

"The day that she comes back to help is a hell of a day," Bush told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's the first time since Nadia's death that she's felt at her center again, and that makes her question what she's been doing and why she's given up."

Will Lindsay snap out of her misery and return to work after saving Halstead?

"Chicago P.D." season 3 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 30, on NBC.
