Sony Pictures and Elizabeth Banks' "Charlie's Angels" has just taken a step closer to its long-awaited premiere by finally casting two of the three leads for the upcoming film.
On Sunday, Variety broke the news that "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart and "12 Years a Slave" actress Lupita Nyong'o are in negotiations to headline the remake. Banks, who scored with "Pitch Perfect 2," is directing the film which is slated for release on June 7, 2019.
No further details regarding the casting have been given and it is still unclear if the reboot will stick closely to either the original TV series or the two theatrical movies.
"Charlie's Angels" first found life on television back in the 1970s. Running on ABC for five seasons, the show starred Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett and Jaclyn Smith as the three Angels, David Doyle as their handler Bosley, and John Forsythe as the voice of Charlie.
In 2000, the property was updated and brought to the big screen with three talents: Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. The movie adaptation, according to Movie Web, became a box office hit, generating $125.3 million domestic and $264.1 million internationally, from a $93 million budget.
A sequel, "Charlie's Angeles: Full Throttle," followed in 2003, and it grossed a total of $359.9 million from a $120 million budget. There has been a reboot on TV as well, with Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor as the Angels. However, it only ran for one season on ABC.
Should Stewart board the project, this would mark her return to big-budget productions. The actress has focused largely on indie films in recent years, earning raves for her performance in "Still Alice," "Cafe Society," and "Personal Shopper." She is set to appear next on Fox's "Underwater," which focuses on a crew of underwater researchers scrambling with the fallout from an earthquake.
As for Nyong'o, the Oscar-winning actress is set to star in two major motion pictures next year: Marvels' "Black Panther" and Disney's "Star Wars Episode IX: The Last Jedi."
