"Castle" showrunners have been preparing for whatever fate has in store of the show after season 8. Two weeks ago, it was reported that they put together an alternate ending for the "Castle" season 8 finale just in case the show gets axed.
Things seems to have changed as showrunner Terrence Winter spoke to TV Line with newfound confidence that "Castle" will get past season 8. "We have one ending, a cliffhanger that we're excited about, because we believe in Castle and we believe that ABC will hopefully, hopefully bring us back," he said.
It is how the beloved series will look and feel like in the next season that he considers two options for. Leads Nathan Fillon and Stana Katic may or may not return after "Castle" season 8 with their contracts about to expire.
Co-showrunner Alexi Hawley stated that they are doing their best to accommodate this possibility in the finale so that when "Castle" season 9 is made official, it will be easy to pick up from the show whatever and whoever they end up working with.
"There's stuff up in the air, so we are trying to leave it in a very dynamic way which leaves open the possibility that maybe the show won't come back in the same form next season — although, again, we really hope that it does," Hawley said.
The "Castle" showrunners, however, admit that a "Castle" season 8 finale has been filmed so as to give the show and the fans proper closure in the event ABC decides to put Castle and Beckett's story to an end.
Of course, Hawley and Winter would rather not talk about this alternate ending one bit "because our hope is that it never airs," Winter says. The "Castle" season 8 finale will air on May 6.
Titled "Crossfire," the season-ender focuses on Castle and Beckett's ultimate bid to bring down LokSat, a mission that endangers their case and their lives.
Before the duo faces their ultimate crisis head-on in "Castle" season 8 finale, the duo will come to Hayley's defense in tonight's episode titled "Backstabber," which sees her fall victim of a cyber-attack after helping out a friend.
