Carrie Underwood's husband Mike Fisher wants to be the best father ever

Canadian hockey player Mike Fisher just can't wait to become a father.

Since the 34-year-old and Christian country singer Carrie Underwood, 31, married in 2010, they have been eager to start a family. Fisher told PEOPLE that they "both love kids, so it's something we're really looking forward to. I'm just thinking about wanting to be the best dad I can be."

Fisher and Underwood are expecting a baby boy this spring, and though they have not decided on a name yet, they have already rounded up a few choices.

One thing Fisher is certain of, however, is that things are going to change when the baby arrives, and it's going to be for the better.

"I think it's going to be awesome," he told The Tennessean. "I've always tried to balance things out in life. I think that's important, and obviously kids are going to add a different dynamic that I can't wait for.

"Having kids is something that a lot of people say it's hard to explain until it really happens, and then it's the greatest thing ever," he added.

The couple has chosen to remain secretive about their due date, but Fisher did share some of his thoughts about his wife's pregnancy.

"She's having a good pregnancy and everything has been going great, so we're blessed that way and praying everything will go well for the next little bit," Fisher said. "I've had siblings that have kids recently, and just having nieces and nephews is really cool. We both love kids, so it's something we're really looking forward to."

His teammate Matt Cullen has three kids and they always play with Fisher when he comes over, and Cullen has no doubt that Fisher would make one amazing father.

"I was afraid we'd maybe scare Fisher off with my three animals," Cullen joked. "But he's just gotten warmed up a little bit with those guys. There's plenty of three-on-one wrestling when he's over at the house. The boys love him."
