New cases were introduced in the premiere episode of "Call the Midwife" season 5, and more are expected to come in the next episodes of BBC's period drama.

During the first episode, the midwives of the Nonnatus House assisted Rhoda Mullucks (Liz White) in giving birth to her third child. When they discovered that the newborn baby was born with serious physical deformities, her husband Bernie (Chris Reilly) refused to acknowledge their child and coldly said, "There is no way that thing is coming back to our house."

Meanwhile, Trixie's (Helen George) way to kick her alcohol problems could cause another dilemma for the nursing convent when she decided to be a Keep Fit instructor.

While walking around Poplar in their leotard get-up, Trixie and Barbara (Charlotte Ritchie) were approached by a photographer to ask them if he could take a photo while the midwives were in the middle of their weekly exercise class. She instantly agreed. But the nuns were not pleased when they saw the photos published in the local newspaper.

By the end of the episode, Bernie finally learned to accept his own daughter when his wife reminded him that "Sometimes in life you've got to be grateful for what you have got, not what you've not got." The family later on returned to their own home to take care of their newborn baby Susan.

The episode also tackled different cases like a severely prolapsed womb and how women remain uncomfortable when talking about their own body parts. It also revealed that Delia (Kate Lamb) will finally move in to the Nonnatus House despite her mother's refusal.

For the upcoming episode, the nuns and midwives of Poplar's nursing convent will face another set of problems.

The official synopsis for the episode reads:

"Barbara experiences the biggest test of her career when a struggling dockworker's wife is forced into a difficult decision about her impending delivery. Nurse Crane meets a new friend who promises great adventure but conceals a secret. Sister Evangelina is forced to take action when a mistake comes to light."

"Call the Midwife" season 5 episode 2 airs Sunday, Jan. 24, on BBC.
