'Borderlands' 3 release date news: title may not be ready before 2018; E3 appearance unlikely

There are expectations that fans will finally get to see "Borderlands 3" for the first time since it was announced at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016.

However, gamers are warned not expect too much because instead of a full-blown teaser, IGN believes that what developer Gearbox Software can show at best regarding "Borderlands 3" is a teaser.

The company recently released "Battleborn" and with the developer building up the game, Gearbox would not want anything even "Borderlands 3" to steal the spotlight from the newly outed title.

"Borderlands 3" is still in early stages of development. There are no characters or a story in place at the moment although Gearbox chief creative champion Mikey Neumann told Eurogamer last month that "Borderlands" character Scooter's son Scooper might be included in the upcoming game.

With that idea in mind, "Borderlands 3" might feature a new breed of heroes taking the mantle from the original group of heroic characters in the first game. But as Neumann emphasized, nothing is set in stone yet.

As for the release date of "Borderlands 3," it usually takes Gearbox three years to put out a new "Borderlands" game. The second installment of the action role-playing shooter was released three years after the original.

But since the developer focused on "Battleborn" after "Borderlands 2," and is just commencing the development of "Borderlands 3," the threequel may not be here in a couple of years.

Although "Borderlands 3" might not make an appearance at E3, some details about the game should be revealed as easter eggs on "Battleborn" DLCs.

"There's already a lot of Borderlands easter eggs in Battleborn," Gearbox CEO and President Randy Pitchford told Eurogamer.

"But they're all from previous Borderlands games. So what if we put easter eggs for future stuff in the DLC?" he added, with "Battleborn" creative director Randy Varnell agreeing to the concept.
