'Borderlands 3' release date: Gearbox Software working on the title; Art style to change?

"Borderlands 3" is still a long way off. Steam/Gearbox Software

Developer Gearbox Software still wants the spotlight on its newly released game "Battleborn," but the company is already working on "Borderlands 3."

Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford announced back in April that "Battleborn" art director Scott Kester will be "moving on to next Borderlands project."

Since the developer still has most of its attention on "Battleborn," especially on downloadable content, it was understandable that "Borderlands 3" was not mentioned at the Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 2016.

In "Borderlands 2," Jeramy Cooke was the art director and his team's work on the hand-drawn art in the game is loved by fans of the video game series. Many fans hope that this distinctive art style will be used in "Borderlands 3" as well.

The art style in "Battleborn" is definitely very different from that of "Borderlands," although this is mostly because of the different story and the vision for each game. Fans hope that the trademark hand-drawn style art will carry over in "Borderlands 3."

Meanwhile, Gearbox chief creative champion Mikey Neumann hinted in an interview with Eurogamer that "Borderlands 3" might feature Scooter's son Scooper.

Since Gearbox is currently focused on "Battleborn," the company plans to tuck in "Borderlands 3" easter eggs in upcoming DLC packs for the game. Outside of that, there are no official unveilings or announcements planned.

As fans await official details about "Borderlands 3," they can check out the first games "Borderlands 2" and "Borderlands: The Prequel" as they head to Nvidia's Shield TV.

According to Droid Gamers, the latter is priced at $14.99. The publication expects the former to be offered around that price range. Nvidia is yet to specify a release date, but should announce soon.

As for the launch timing for "Borderlands 3," the game is still too early in the development for Gearbox to commit to a release date.

The studio released the second "Borderlands" game three years after the first one, so it is highly likely that fans will wait that long for "Borderlands 3."
