'Batgirl' movie updates: Joss Whedon more interested in the character rather than actress to portray the role

A month after it has been announced that Joss Whedon will be at the directorial helm of DC's "Batgirl," the director has recently revealed that he does not have an actress in mind to breathe life to the DC superhero yet as he is more focused on developing her story, admitting he has finally developed an obsession for the character.

Having directed several blockbuster Marvel movies, there is no denying that Whedon is considered a Marvel royalty. Hence, when it was reported last month that the prolific director will be helming the upcoming DC movie "Batgirl," it was inevitable for fans to be shocked.

At last week's premiere showing of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," Whedon was asked to give some updates on his upcoming movie project, his first ever for DC, "Batgirl." There, he revealed that the story of Barbara Gordon/Batgirl is slowly growing on him.

"She came up, and I started getting obsessed with how a young woman could get hardcore enough to need to put on the cowl. Like, what's her damage? She didn't have her parents killed in an alley. Who is this person, who decides — rather than being forced to by their childhood trauma — decides to pick up this life. How intense and driven that person is ... I just couldn't stop thinking about it," Whedon told Heat Vision.

It is apparent that Whedon is more interested in the character itself rather than the actress to eventually breathe life to it. Hence, when asked if he already has someone in mind to play the role, he hinted that it may not be someone who has already earned a big name in Hollywood. For Whedon, the important thing is that, whoever the choice will be, she can effectively and successfully give justice to Batgirl.

"I'm not against movie stars, they're great. But you need somebody who's going to be just right," Whedon told Variety still at the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" premiere.

The last time Batgirl was featured in a live-action movie was via the 1997 "Batman and Robin" film, where the character was breathed to life by Alicia Silverstone.

Batgirl was also portrayed earlier by Yvonne Craig in the "Batman" TV series that ran in the 1960s.
