'Avengers: Infinity War' rumors: There are at least 76 characters in the film, 40 in massive action scene

"Avengers: Infinity War" is shaping up to be the biggest movie of the year. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo previously teased there will be 67 comic book characters appearing in the film, but it seems like there is much more than that.

While promoting his new film, "12 Strong," Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), was asked why fans should be excited about the film and he responded, teasing the scale of the project.

"This is one of the biggest things in film history and to be a part of it was just incredible," he said. "I think what these characters are about to face -- with Thanos -- there's been nothing quite like it. There are 76 cast members or something like that. I think what people are going to be excited about is what I was excited about and that's Thor meeting the Guardians and Iron Man meeting Doctor Strange."

In one battle scene alone, "Avengers: Infinity War" is said to feature as many as 40 superheroes all at once. The claim comes from Falcon actor Anthony Mackie who teased at Ace Comic-Con the big sequence in the middle of the MCU culmination where "all of us are on set and it's like forty superheroes."

The scene in question was briefly featured in the "Infinity War" trailer, showing a whole host of MCU heroes running toward presumably Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his Black Order.

As to who exactly those characters are remains to be seen, but Screen Rant rounded up the likely ones to show up in that big "Infinity War" sequence. Among them are the Avengers including the core team, new recruits, and associated heroes like Wong (Benedict Wong) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson); the Wakandans like T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Shuri (Letitia Wright), Dora Milaje leader Okoye (Danai Gurira, and possibly former Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett); the Guardians of the Galaxy; and probably Captain Marvel (Brie Larson).

"Avengers: Infinity War" opens in cinemas on May 4.
