'Avengers: Infinity War' cast news: Jeremy Renner wants 'Hawkeye' movie sooner than later

Fans are not the only ones who want a Hawkeye solo movie. Jeremy Renner, who plays the role, has long said he would like to see it happen, too, and he recently reiterated that he is still up for that. However, he wants that to happen relatively soon before he passes the half-century mark if possible.

Speaking to South China Morning Post, the 46-year-old said, "It would be a wonderful thing. Just don't wait too long! I don't want to be in my 50s in tights."

Debuting in "Thor" way back in 2011, Renner's bow- and arrow-wielding Avenger has been one of the most important supporting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He has been in four movies over the past six years and that would become six by the time Phase 3 is over.

The idea of a Hawkeye spin-off has been mulled over for years. But Renner previously thought if Marvel was going to do it, it would have already happened. As he put it, "I always thought it would make sense early on to do a Hawkeye/Widow movie because they're quite similar -- they don't have powers, have high skill sets, and have history together."

Screen Rant claims his contract with the studio does include a potential spin-off. Unfortunately, Marvel has offered nothing yet in regards to anything more for the character other than appearances in the main MCU event movies. Now, as more superheroes from Fox like the X-Men and Fantastic Four are entering the MCU, a standalone film for the archer just got more unlikely.

He is not the only one without a standalone film, though. Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Mark Ruffalo's Hulk both appear only in the main event film as well. The latter does not specifically have a spin-off because Universal Pictures owns the distributing rights of solo Hulk movies. Still, Marvel promised a three-movie story arc for the Green Goliath that started with "Thor: Ragnarok" and ends with "Avengers 4." Perhaps, they can do the same for Hawkeye. Fans can only keep their fingers crossed.

Regardless, Hawkeye will be back in action on "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers 4." Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the third installment opens in cinemas on May 4, 2018, and the Phase 3 capper on May 3, 2019.
