[Spoiler Alert! Major spoilers from the manga ahead]
Reports say the new season of the anime will show Eren's ability to transform into a Titan. In the popular manga created by Hajime Isayama, Eren first showcased his Titan-shifting capability when his human form was swallowed by a Titan.
In "Attack on Titan" manga, he was able to summon his flesh-eating giant alter ego after he saw other soldiers (still alive) inside the Titan's stomach, desperate to see the light of day and the families they love. The fight prior to Eren being ingested by the Titan and left without one limb and arm.
Because of this, he pushed himself to do the one goal he always instilled in his mind – kill every Titan there is – despite his condition. He eventually emerged from the Titan's throat as a Titan himself and basically trounced every other Titan around.
According to rumors, Eren's Titan-shifting background will be fleshed out in "Attack on Titan" season 2. It allegedly has something to do with his father, who is believed to still be alive, as opposed to what fans were made to believe.
Eren won't be the only Titan shifter exposed in "Attack on Titan" season 2. Spoilers also hint that Ymir has the same ability. In fact, it was already teased that she holds the key to the "ultimate conclusion" of the whole story and she could be the one to reveal how the Titans came to exist.
Ymir hasn't been a big presence in the anime but this will change in the upcoming season. Unfortunately, "Attack on Titan" season 2 release date news is still difficult to come by. Regardless, the plan is for new episodes to be out this year.
There's no exact date for the premiere yet but it looks like the crew behind the series is still waiting for two more arcs of the manga to be released before starting on the job.
