With "Justice League" hitting the big screen next week, Jason Momoa has started to shed light on DC's next and his very first solo superhero film "Aquaman." Although his character would be introduced in the upcoming team-up movie, the actor promises that "Aquaman" will be very much an origin film.
Speaking to Comic Book, he revealed that the next DC will explore Atlantis, where Aquaman's mother came from, and tell the story of his childhood, with multiple versions of the young Arthur Curry appearing in the film. It will establish the seven kingdoms and introduce a threat which would cause an epic battle later on.
"Surpassing Justice League, this moment in time is his call to become king," he told the publication. "The only thing that can save Atlantis is me fighting my own brother. There's a big battle, and there's an epic [fight]."
That big battle will likely give a nod to "Star Wars'" eccentric action sequences. According to Momoa, there will be gigantic ships and guys riding sharks. As he teased, "It's going to be this whole world you've never seen before."
Wrapping up production late last month, "Aquaman" is set for release next year. But, before fans learn about his origin, they will meet Momoa's character first in "Justice League" which will premiere this Nov. 17. He made it clear, however, that the Arthur Curry in "Justice League" will be different from the one people will meet in "Aquaman."
"If Justice League is like seeing him at his lowest," the actor shared, "...when we get to Aquaman you know why he became that, and how he had been put in that lonely spot."
Directed by James Wan from a script he wrote alongside Will Beall, and Geoff Johns, "Aquaman" opens in cinemas on Dec. 21, 2018. Apart from Momoa, it also stars Amber Heard as his wife Mera; Willem Dafoe as Atlantis' chief scientific adviser, Nuidis Vulko; Temuera Morrison as Arthur's father, Tomas Curry; Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus of Xebel; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta; and Ludi Lin as Murk, the leader of Atlantis' frontline army.
Patrick Wilson will also appear, as well as Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman and Michael Beach. Wilson will portray Aquaman's half-brother Orm Marius while Kidman will take on the role of Arthur's mother, Atlanna. Beach, on the other hand, will be Manta's father, Jesse Kane.
