Apple Watch Series 2 vs. Samsung Gear S3 comparison: Battle of the next-gen flagship wearables

The rivalry between Samsung and Apple goes beyond the smartphone market nowadays, as both companies unveiled their next-generation smartwatches just to vie against each other for the best new wearable device.

On Aug. 31, the South Korea-based electronics manufacturer unveiled the Samsung Gear S3 in Berlin, Germany just before the annual IFA trade show began. On the other hand, the Cupertino-based tech giant dropped the announcement about the new Apple Watch 2 during the company's Keynote event on Sept. 7.

Based on the designs of both wearable devices, the new Samsung Gear S3 and Apple Watch 2 almost look the same as their predecessors. But the new generation wearables will reportedly come out with more features compared to the older ones.

According to the reports, the Samsung Gear S3 will have the same circular face that the Samsung Galaxy S2 has. But this time, there will be two types of models for the Gear 3. One of them is the Samsung Galaxy Gear S3 Classic, which, reportedly, has a more minimalist design. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Gear S3 frontier is created with a more playful, sports-oriented appearance.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch 2 also reportedly almost have the same look as the previous model. However, the new edition of the wearable device will have a ceramic white model that is said to be four times harder than regular steel.

Samsung developed the Galaxy Gear 3 with a 1.3-inch Super AMOLED watch face display with 360x360 pixels resolution as well as the brand's in-house Tizen operating system. It also comes with a number of features, including the accelerometer, a heart-rate sensor, GPS, altimeter, built-in compass, LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity, 4 GB of music storage space, as well as IP68 water resistance. The device can also last up to four days without charging.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch 2 will come with an option of a 38mm 1.3-inch OLED with 38mm: 340x272 pixels resolution or 42mm 1.5-inch OLED with 42mm: 390x312 pixels resolution on its watch face display. It is also equipped with other built-in features like the accelerometer, the heart-rate sensor, GPS, LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity, 2 GB of music storage, as well as 5ATM water resistance. It will be run by Apple's WatchOS 3 operating system, but it can only last up to 18 hours before its battery needs to be recharged.

Samsung will ship the units of Samsung Gear S3 later this year, while Apple will release the Apple Watch 2 in September.
