After the dismal box-office response for Marvel's latest film "Ant-Man" over the weekend, will fans still see actor Paul Rudd don the shrinking costume for another standalone film?

The Peyton Reed-helmed movie allegedly earned $63.6 million in North American countries as of July 21, and its opening day sales reached $23.4 million. It is considered as the second-lowest opening day box-office among all Marvel films, next to 2008's "The Incredible Hulk." However, Reed is still hoping that a sequel for the film would still be considered even if Marvel has yet to announce if there will be an "Ant-Man 2" or not.

In an interview with the Entertainment Weekly during the film's release, the director admitted that he would be very willing to return to the "Ant-Man" franchise if the need arises.

"I'd love the chance to do a second movie and further the voyage of these characters and do another Ant-Man adventure where it's not an origins story and we're free to just take those characters and go wherever we want to go," Reed stated.

He also said that there are several questions about some of the characters of the film that are left unanswered. According to the filmmaker, there are still a lot of details in the story that have yet to be told.

One of the things that moviegoers would want to see in an "Ant-Man" sequel is the development of Evangeline Lilly's character Hope Van Dyne, who was seen wearing the costume of Wasp toward the end of the film. Wasp can be considered as one of the fan-favorite characters from Marvel Comics. Because of this, avid Marvel fans are also hoping to see the original Wasp in the next film, which happens to be Hope's mother Janet.

While there is no concrete information yet regarding Marvel's plans for "Ant-Man 2," the film director is hoping that the studio executives will start talking about it soon.

"In the best case scenario, if we're lucky enough to actually have serious conversations about it, I think everybody would be inclined to make it happen as soon as possible," Reed stated.
