Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates 2016: Global Sony Xperia Z5 variants, select Xperia Z3 and Z4 devices receive software download

A week after the Android 6.0 Marshmallow rollout to the Sony Xperia Z5 series in Japan, Google's latest software is now ready for its global release to the said smartphone family as well as other handsets from Sony.

All Sony Xperia Z5 models across the globe are finally getting the Marshmallow treatment. Sony Xperia Z5 Premium and Xperia Z5 Compact are also receiving the sweet software upgrades, as well as the Xperia Z3 Plus and Z4 Tablet.

It is important to note that the Wi-Fi and LTE variants of the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet will be getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and so will the single-SIM version of the Sony Xperia Z3 Plus. The Japan-based tech firm, however, promises that the software for the dual-SIM variant will "follow shortly."

The Android 6.0 Marshmallow build being rolled out has the build number 32.1.A.1.163. It already comes with the February 2016 security patches from Google, in addition to the native features of the new mobile operating system.

With Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the aforementioned Sony Xperia devices should enjoy longer battery life, thanks to the new Doze mode, which puts the devices to deep sleep in order to save juice. When the handset slips to this mode, all apps in the background will be closed.

Also, the update employs a new and improved security system on the apps. Volume controls for media and alarm are now separate. Another aspect to look forward to is the all-new Do Not Disturb mode, which allows users to select which apps and contacts can notify them.

Unfortunately, Sony did not include its very own STAMINA mode in this Xperia Z5, Z3 Plus and Z4 Tablet update. With this mode, users can extend the standby time of the device by four times. The company says that it will just be included in the next update.

Another missing feature from the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for the Sony Xperia devices is adoptable storage, where users can expand the handset's memory with a microSD card.

Meanwhile, Sony has confirmed that Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow is not yet ready. For now, Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Premium, Z5 Compact, Xperia Z3 Plus and Z4 Tablet can get a load of the 6.0 version.
