"American Horror Story" is making a huge change in season 8: It will no longer be set in the past nor the present as many previous seasons did. Series producer Ryan Murphy confirmed on Friday that the anthology series will instead take place in the future.
"All I'll say about it is I want to go to the future -- still topical, but the future, which I've never done," Murphy said. "I think people will like it, it's different from what we've done before, but I always try and do the opposite of what I've done on that show."
Specifics beyond the premise that it will be set in the future were not provided, but he did clarify that it would not be set in space unlike many popular shows such as Syfy's "Killjoys" and the recent turn on Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Either way, he already pitched the idea to FX head John Landgraf, and Murphy said he actually loved it and "fell out of his chair with joy."
That is exciting news for fans, but they are going to be even more psyched about season 9. Apparently, Murphy is much further along in planning it than season 8 because, if all goes according to plan, the subsequent season is the series' long-awaited first crossover.
"We're working on it, but it's not going to be the next season," Murphy told Entertainment Weekly. "Next season is season 8, and it'll probably be the one after that. "We've already met about it and outlined it, but it won't be next because some of the people are not available."
There is no news of the casting yet, but he aims to bring everyone -- from the first "American Horror Story" until the most recent one -- on board. That includes Dylan McDermott, who was last seen in "Asylum;" Connie Britton of "Murder House;" series veteran Kathy Bates; and fan-favorite, Jessica Lange.
That reunion sounds fun, but Murphy said it actually makes the writing process longer "because it's literally 25 people's schedules." However, he is keeping his fingers crossed that they will all return. Fans should, too.
"American Horror Story" season 8 has no exact release date yet, but it is expected to air sometime this year.
