Volvo has given the public the first look at the 2019 V60, a new, "scaled-down" station wagon model set to hit the U.S. market later this year.

"The family estate driver is an important customer for our business and has been for generations," Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson said at the new model's launch, adding, "The new V60 honors that tradition, but also takes it much further."

Volvo unveiled its new model on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in Stockholm. It boasts an all-leather interior and can comfortably seat five people while still reserving space for things like luggage or multiple grocery bags. While this is a newer, "scaled down" model, its interiors are virtually identical to those of previous models.

The V90, which was revealed to the public in March 2016, is similar to the V60 both inside and out. This is likely because both the V60 and V90, as well as Volvo's other modern models like the XC90 and the XC60, were built under the guidance of Volvo's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. This means that all these vehicles have identical underpinnings, making the V60 a "scaled down" mid-size version of the full-size V90 wagon.

The V60 is about seven inches shorter lengthwise than the V90. It also has a lower height, though in most other respects, it is similar to the older model.

Volvo is known to produce some of the safest cars on the road, and the V60 is no different. The company gave this model a semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system and the City Safety automatic braking system. These systems can recognize pedestrians and can make braking possible up to 80 miles per hour, thus reducing the chances of collision. There are also additional safety features that provide a safer driving experience.

Two versions of the V60 are set to hit U.S. market in the fall of this year: the four-wheel-drive V60 T5 with 250 horsepower and the all-wheel-drive V60 T6 with 310 horsepower. Both versions use gasoline as fuel, but other markets are set to receive hybrid versions of the V60. These versions are plug-in hybrids with either 340 or 390 horsepower.

Buyers in the U.S. can avail of the car through the Care by Volvo payment plan and can also swap the car for a new model in just 12 months.
