'Nightwing' news: Director promises unique take on Dick Grayson, confirms open casting call

Chris McKay may have already brought Dick Grayson to the big screen in this year's "The LEGO Batman Movie," but he promises his take on the character in the live-action film "Nightwing" will present a very different Boy Wonder.

Amid fans' worrying reaction that the solo film might be too similar to Grayson's role in McKay's "The LEGO Batman Movie," the filmmaker assured they have nothing to fear. According to him, his upcoming entry to the DC Extended Universe will be completely unique from what everyone has seen in the past and true to Nightwing's character.

"This movie will be different than LEGO Batman," he wrote on Twitter, "different than any other Gotham based film or TV show and will be a wholly original look at Robin/Dick Grayson. Don't lose hope."

The "LEGO Batman's" portrayal of Dick Grayson, aka Robin, as an orphan who idolizes the Dark Knight so much was not well-received when the movie premiered. While all the characters were exaggerated for comedic purposes, even Batman himself, fans would not want to see a take on Grayson's character like that again in "Nightwing."

There is not much known about the movie at this point. "Nightwing" has yet to cast an actor for the lead role, although actors like Dacre Montgomery, Finn Wittrock, and more recently, Dave Patel, have all been linked to the role. Mckay previously set the record straight that they are taking their time in choosing an actor because they need to find the perfect person.

"We need this movie to blow your mind," he said.

When they do start the casting process, McKay later added that they will hold an open casting call, a statement he reiterated once more this week. He urged aspiring actors to have an agent or a manager submit their work to the studio.

DC and Warner Bros. have yet to give "Nightwing" a release date, but McKay recently hinted that it could enter pre-production sometime next year.
