'Batgirl' cast news: 'Pitch Perfect' star Hailee Steinfeld wants lead role

While little is known about Joss Whedon's "Batgirl" film at the moment, it already has a few actresses lining up for the lead role. The latest one to express interest is "Pitch Perfect" star Hailee Steinfeld.

In an interview with MTV International, the 21-year-old singer-actress was asked if she would be open to taking a superhero role. She said, "Yes, absolutely, definitely on my bucket list." Steinfeld was indecisive about who exactly she would like to play, but later named Batgirl, which was suggested by the interviewer.

"Not going to lie," Steinfeld responded, "that's kind of what I was thinking, but I didn't know what to say. I would love that."

Steinfeld's filmography makes her a pretty qualified choice. She got her big break in 2010's "True Gift," which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in a slew of films including "Pitch Perfect," "Barely Lethal," and "The Edge of Seventeen," among others.

However, chances are slim for her to snag the role if Whedon's plans are to be followed. Earlier this year, the "Batgirl" director revealed he is looking to cast an unknown actor in the titular role and Steinfeld certainly is not unknown.

"I'm not against movie stars," he said. "They're great, but you need somebody who's going to be just right. And, in a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight."

If ever Whedon decides to go for a mainstream actress, there are also other couple of stars vying for the role. According to Screen Rant, "Quantico" star Priyanka Chopra also voiced interest, while "Don't Breathe" actress Jane Levy and Lindsey Morgan of "The 100" are linked to the role.

Either way, it may be a while before the movie announces its lead actress. "Batgirl" is still in development right now and has not yet started the casting process.
