'Avengers: Infinity War' cast, plot rumors: Will Crossbones ever return to the MCU?

Frank Grillo's Brock Grumlow had a building dropped on him in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," but he survived and showed up as Crossbones in "Captain America: Civil War." Although he was seemingly killed by his own dramatic explosion when he took on a vexed Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) in the opening act, some never really thought he was dead because there was no corpse. So, fans are wondering if his character will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Grillo got everyone's hopes up at the New York Comic-Con when he told SYFY that he was interested to suit up again as the villain sometime in the future. "Hopefully down the road somewhere, Crossbones comes back," the actor said. "He was blown up, but they're comic book movies."

This came shortly after he teased that Marvel Studios had no idea what to do with his character yet. Thus, they were leaving the door open for Crossbones' possible return. This had fans excited for Crossbones'' possible resurrection.

Indeed, comic book movies have always been notorious for bringing characters back from the grave, using a variety of methods in order to do so, from cloned twins to parallel dimensions.

Unfortunately, Grillo is now retracting his statement, clarifying that there are currently no plans for his return that he is aware of.

"I said that once before about two weeks ago and people jumped on that and thought I said Crossbones is back. No. That's ridiculous," he explained. "But we'll see what happens. I'm not waiting for the phone to ring."

Still, anything is possible, especially in the next two "Avengers" film. Set pictures previously revealed a resurrected Quicksilver (Aaron-Taylor Johnson). While it remains to be seen how he came back from the dead, fans are guessing Thanos will be putting the Infinity Stones to good use and revive some faces from the past. That being said, Crossbones' return is still possible.
