In "Dragon Ball XenoVerse," players can level up and gain new moves and skills through the help of mentors and by completing challenges.

Mentors are characters in the "Dragon Ball" world who train players so that they could unlock special skills and moves to further their progress in the game. There are numerous mentors scattered around the world map, especially in the central hub Toki Toki City. Also, players must do some exploration first before choosing the mentor that they want, since they can only have one active mentor at a time. Although players can switch mentors, changing should be done in-between the training period when the whole mentor challenges have yet to be completed. Progress will also be lost; thus, players need to start again from scratch if they choose to go back to a previous mentor.

In order to unlock new skills and moves, players need to complete the challenges set by the mentors. Each mentor will have four challenges, from easy to hard completion difficulties. Aside from completing a challenge, players need to fill up the Friendship Meter in order to move to a new challenge.

The Friendship Meter per mentor can be found in the Play Data Menu. There are 12 slots for the Friendship Meter, and each slot will have four circles on the left which will be filled when a challenge is completed; the bar on the right is the Friendship Meter and will begin to fill up as the player gains experience. Once the bar reaches one circle, the next circle will now be available, indicating that the next challenge is already unlocked.

Once all four challenges by the chosen master are complete, the player will receive a Z Soul, increasing the damage for the mentor's specific move that is rewarded to the player.

How would a player complete the Friendship Meter fast? First, the player must gain steady experience by going through the story mode and doing parallel quests. In addition, they must always use the mentor as the NPC partner during parallel quests. Using the moves learned from the mentor will also increase the Friendship Meter.
